When I was young, I loved Japanese anime and manga, and I became interested in tea ceremony, flower arrangement, as well as Japanese legends and myths. I learned that Japan is a unique country where tradition and modernity blend together, adorned with beautiful nature throughout the four seasons, as well as a rich food culture. Before I knew it, I developed a strong desire to visit the country depicted in those works and to deeply engage with Japanese culture and society. With this in mind, I started learning Japanese when I was in high school and chose to major in Japanese at university.
Additionally, I wish to gain the opportunity to deepen my specialized knowledge through experiencing life in Japan. I believe that using Japanese in actual conversations will help me learn natural expressions and improve my speaking skills significantly. Language is the key to understanding culture, and by interacting with local people, I hope to experience authentic Japanese and gain a deeper understanding of it.
Now that I have the opportunity for an exchange program, I am determined to expand my international perspective and learn different values and ways of thinking during this year-long exchange in Japan. I aspire to achieve cultural, linguistic, and academic growth through this experience.
The seasons have changed, and spring has finally arrived. It has now been six months since I came to Japan. When I first arrived, I often found myself at a loss for words, but little by little, I’ve become more comfortable speaking. I was anxious in the beginning, but thanks to the kindness and support of many people, I can now truly enjoy life in Japan.
Over the past six months, I’ve learned a great deal at Hyogo University of Teacher Education. In particular, studying Japan’s educational philosophy and teaching methodologies has been an invaluable experience. I was able to explore various approaches to education, such as the national curriculum guidelines and the concept of active learning.
There are many unforgettable memories from this half year. In the fall, I felt the vibrant energy of the students at the school festival. In the winter, I went on my first shrine visit of the year in Kyoto with friends. During spring break, I visited the sea in Kobe and had the chance to meet a Chinese person who has worked in Japan for ten years, from whom I learned a lot.
These past six months have been like a treasure to me—not only for the knowledge I gained but also for the meaningful encounters and cultural experiences that helped me grow. I will continue striving to deepen my learning, with the hope that one day I can give back the kindness I’ve received.
Last September, I arrived in Japan, gently ushered in by the autumn breeze. Over the past year, I've experienced the crispness of winter, the gentle warmth of spring, and the soothing sounds of summer bell crickets. Now, as autumn returns, I find myself bidding farewell once again. The cyclical passage of seasons has profoundly transformed me.
Initially, I struggled to keep up with the pace of classes and to grasp expressions. However, as I gradually acclimated, I became acutely aware of my own shortcomings. This realization taught me the invaluable lesson of perseverance and the importance of consistent effort.
Through various events, I've had the privilege of engaging with many individuals, offering me glimpses into Japanese society—a truly invaluable experience. One of the greatest attractions of studying abroad is the opportunity to interact with people from diverse countries. I've met not only Japanese friends but also fellow students from Asia, Europe, and Africa. Despite our differing cultures, customs, and values, these interactions have enriched my perspective, allowing me to learn from one another.
This past year has been more than just a passage of time; it has been a significant chapter in my life, imbuing it with deep meaning. Living alone abroad for the first time has been an opportunity to rediscover myself and refine my character. Moving forward, I will continue to walk my path, drawing strength from the lessons and connections I've gained during my time in Japan.
